Grandparents’ Day: A celebration of love and family!

Theddlethorpe Academy was delighted to welcome families into school for a special Grandparents’ Day celebration on earlier in October.

National Grandparents’ Day is celebrated each year in the UK on the first Sunday in October. It’s a day dedicated to recognising and honouring the important role grandparents play in family life, sharing their wisdom, love and support across generations. Theddlethorpe Academy wanted to mark the occasion by welcoming our grandparents into school for a fun-filled and meaningful afternoon together.

Grandparents of pupils were invited into classrooms to take part in craft activities alongside their grandchildren, enjoying the opportunity to share in the children’s learning and creativity. Our Early Years classes worked together with their grandparents to create beautiful pine cone and teacup bird feeders to take home as a keepsake.

Miss Marrows commented: “We really enjoyed the afternoon. All grandparents supported the children with making pine cone or teacup bird feeders that they took home.

The children were confident in telling the adults what they needed to do and how to do it whilst of course getting very messy! We all had a lovely time with some really lovely comments about the afternoon being thoughtful and enjoyable.”

Dyson class decorated window art and read stories with their grandparents while Einstein class spent the afternoon weaving Mexican Eyes using natural materials found in the playground. Their finished designs were then hung from the trees to add a beautiful pop of colour to the garden area.

Anning Teacher Emma Hardy said: “Grandparents’ Day was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the important role grandparents play in our pupils’ lives. It was heart-warming to see the children beam with pride as they shared their classroom, what they had made, and welcomed their grandparents into school. Events like this really strengthen the sense of community we value so much.”

After their classroom sessions, grandparents were treated to a hot drink and biscuit in the school hall, giving them time to chat, meet teachers, and catch up with their grandchildren’s friends. The event was a heartfelt celebration of the important role grandparents play in family life and in supporting children’s education.

Grandparents who attended were full of praise for the event, saying:

“It was wonderful, I wouldn’t miss this — and we got a gift to take away too.”

“Seeing all the children working together was great.”

Principal Mrs Clarke added: “It was wonderful to see so many grandparents in school, sharing special moments with their grandchildren. Events like this remind us just how important those family connections are and they enrich our school community and create memories that children will cherish for years to come.”

The afternoon was a great success, filled with laughter, creativity, and warmth. It was a true celebration of family and togetherness at Theddlethorpe Academy.
