Poets! Poets!

In the summer term, our Year 1 and 2 pupils took a delicious journey through the world of poetry and have all become published authors!

The children were studying the poem ‘Spaghetti! Spaghetti!’, a lively piece that explored food through the five senses.

During their studies, an exciting opportunity arrived—a national poetry competition from Young Writers! The children then rose to the challenge and began crafting their poems as part of the competition.

The classes used this poem as inspiration to create their own poems celebrating their own favourite foods. Some of these included steak, pizza, bubblegum, chicken and candyfloss! They were encouraged to focus on their senses and describe how the food looked, tasted and smelled.

The children, with the help of Miss Smith were encouraged to add adjectives, alliteration and even some similes! Once they were all complete, each child wrote their poem onto an application form and sent it to Young Writers in May 2025.

The school were thrilled to hear that all of the children in Year 1 and 2 had been successful and every poem had been selected and would be included in the book, which was later published in August.

The pupils, who are now in Year 2 and 3 couldn’t be prouder of their achievement. Below are four standout poems from our budding writers:

L-R: Berrie Marshall, Kacie-Rae Wright, Poppy Jones and Sidney Gotts with their Young Writers book.

The children shared their excitement about seeing their work in print. Kacie-Rae Wright said: “I enjoyed writing the poem and I gave a copy of the book to lots of my family. I decided to write about chips, because they are my favourite!”

Berrie Marshall added: “I did my poem on watermelon! I really enjoyed writing it and I love seeing my poem in the book. I am very happy and proud of my poem.”

Principal Rachel Clarke said: “Congratulations to all of our young poets! Their creativity and hard work truly paid off and I am so pleased that both classes did so well and that every child had their work published. They should be extremely proud of themselves because we certainly are!”
