Young Pupil Names Lincolnshire’s Newest Gritter
A creative Year 2 student at Theddlethorpe Academy has made their mark on Lincolnshire’s winter fleet after winning a county-wide competition to name one of Lincolnshire County Council’s newest gritters for the area.
The witty and inspired entry from Lucas Harvey (7), “Spreaddlethorpe,” is now proudly displayed on the vehicle.
Lucas said: “I am proud to see the name I chose on the gritter! It looks really good!”
To celebrate the occasion, the council brought the newly named gritter to Theddlethorpe Academy for an official unveiling. Excitement buzzed across the school as pupils from all year groups gathered to see the gritter in person.
The visit turned into a fun and educational experience as pupils learned when and why gritters are used, how they operate and how they help keep Lincolnshire’s roads safe during winter weather and they were given the opportunity to sit in the gritter.
Principal, Rachel Clarke said: “It was a fantastic moment for the whole school and we are incredibly proud of Lucas for winning the competition. ‘Spreaddlethorpe’ is a brilliant and creative name.
I am very grateful to Lincolnshire County Council for a memorable and educational visit. The children loved sitting in the gritter and asked some brilliant questions. We look forward to seeing the gritter go past us when the colder weather creeps in!”
Several students stated that they would love to drive the gritter when they grow up, however they were less keen when council representatives warned them that gritter operators usually start work at around 3am.
Lincolnshire County Council’s highways team praised the imaginative entry and the enthusiasm of the students, noting how events like this help young people connect with local services in meaningful ways.
